In frames of the 6th Summer
All-Ukrainian Veterans Games in commemoration of Mikhail Baka Maxibasketball
tournament was held on August 6-10, 2015, in Yuzhny City, Odessa region.
Veterans competed in M40+, M45+ and M65+ age categories. Tournament’s matches were
played in two sports complexes "Olymp" and "Khimik". Four
veterans’ teams from Odessa, Nikolaev, Dnepropetrovsk and Kyiv competed in M65+
age category.
In the first day of the
tournament AMICO-Nikolaev team confronted Dnepropetrovsk team. On the first
minutes of the game Nikolaev went forward 6-4. But with efforts of
Dnepropetrovsk players Vikhariev, Bychkov and Pozdieiev the first period came
to the end with their 11-8 advantage.
Nikolaev began the second
quarter with a run that lifted them to a 24-22 lead. In this period Yakiv
Kultyhin contributed intensive and selfness playing on both ends of the court
to the AMICO-Nikolaev team.
In the third term the
performance of Dnepropetrovsk player Bychkov changed the face of a game.
Bychkov was the best for Dnipro, appearing in the most needed times and places.
With his 8 points Dnepropetrovsk team closed three periods leading 34-32.
The fourth period Nikolaev began with strong
offensive actions and took the lead. In dying seconds of the game AMICO had a
42-39 advantage. But the ball from Pozdieiev entered the basket and changed
score, 42-41. With two seconds to go Dnepropetrovsk player Bychkov was fouled
and he was awarded with two free throws. The outcome of the game was in his
hands. Bychkov made two shots, missing one of them, 42-42! Overtime gave to
AMICO’s players a chance to savour the taste of victory. But two-point shot
from Pozdieiev put Dnipro ahead 50-48 within the final second of overtime. 
Same day Odessa played
against Kyiv. Kyiv’s players were unable to deal with strong offensive Odessa
team and suffered their first loss of the tournament, 32-57.
In the second day of the
tournament AMICO-Nikolaev competed with Kyiv team. Using strong spurt in the
first minutes of the game, Nikolaev team established control of the match. They
showed great offensive effectiveness, shooting from the field and from
three-point area. AMICO –Nikolaev ended the first half with a 16-point gap
31-15. Having a significant advantage, AMICO in the second half comfortably closed
the game 48-37.

Odessa met with
Dnepropetrovsk. In this match Odessa dominated from start to finish, outscoring
Dnipro team 40-24.
In the third day of the
tournament Kyiv competed with Dnepropetrovsk. Dnipro team dominated three
periods in a row, constantly scoring points and increasing their advantage to
27-17. In the fourth quarter eventually Kyiv figured out how to handle
Dnepropetrovsk team. Kyiv team pressed the accelerator and they many times over
increased the speed of their actions. All the time a ball flew over
Dnepropetrovsk’s half of the court, periodically entering in the basket. At the
end of the game 6 points from Zaritsky brought a victory to veterans of Kyiv,
32-31.
The match between Odessa
and Nikolaev was the last game of the tournament. Nikolaev team had a huge
desire to win this match. But excessive nervousness and fussiness didn’t allow
AMICO-Nikolaev team to achieve good result. Within three periods Odessa surely
and purposefully scored points, 28-14. The fourth quarter Nikolaev started with
attacking the rival. Odessa answered with impenetrable defense allowing
AMICO-Nikolaev only 3 points to score. As the buzzer sounded, Odessa team began
to celebrate a 39-17 victory. They deservedly won a rank of the champion of the
tournament. Nikolaev received the second place. Dnepropetrovsk earned the third
position at the tournament.
